Saint Nicholas of Kípous
17th-century structure on the site of a 14th-century church.
The Church of Saint Nicholas of Kípous, located just below the Peparetheio Primary School of Skopelos, was built on the site of an earlier Byzantine church dating to the 14th century. It was erected by the prominent Skopelitian family of Ravtákis (or Raptákis), specifically by Stamatis Ravtákis (or Raptákis), in the early 17th century—or perhaps even earlier.
It is a single-aisled, barrel-vaulted church that was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1821. At that time, the small monastic complex of Saint Nicholas also served as a parish. The roof is gabled and covered with limestone tiles.
According to the late scholar Fr. Kostas Kallianos, Saint Nicholas was once a small monastery with cells and, during 1828–1829, hosted the first Greek School of Skopelos. Its teacher was the distinguished Asterios Filippidis, who also taught the father of the writer Pavlos Nirvanas.
After 1821, Stamatis Ravtákis’ descendant, Michail, reclaimed ownership of the monastery from the state, as all monasteries had passed into public hands during that era. In 1834, by royal decree of King Otto, the monastery was returned to the Ravtákis family.
Wall paintings from the earlier church still survive inside, along with triptychs and possibly some of the rare icons once housed there. Scattered remnants of the older church can still be seen in the courtyard. The books and manuscripts of the school were kept in the sanctuary—certainly until the year 2000. By that time, the property was inherited by the Barberis family.
